Be a good sport…Recycling now at sporting/recreation venues across the Region.
The Public Place Recycling project which targeted major sporting venues across the Region to install permanent public place recycling and undertake educational initiatives to increase the recovery of materials and decrease litter at these venues is coming to a close.
The venues below are utilised for many activities and are the main recreation and social centres for the Regional towns. The installation of recycling at these venues will therefore reinforce the message for the need for recycling to occur everywhere.
These venues were:
- Benalla Show Grounds
- Martin Park (Wodonga)
- Mansfield Recreation Reserve (Alpine)
- Pioneer Park Recreation Reserve (Bright/ Alpine Shire)
- Mt Beauty Recreation Reserve
- The Barr Reserve (Wangaratta)
- Chiltern Recreation Reserve
- Barkley Park Reserve (Rutherglen)
- Wangaratta Racecourse (Turf Club)
NevRwaste would like to acknowledge the 6 waste/environment officers and the relevant sporting facilities committees of management (CoMs) who were instrumental in the delivery and implementation of this project in their municipalities. The final report detailing the significant increase in recycling and decrease in litter will be available on our website in December 2011. We look forward to seeing the success of this project continue in these communities.
Excellent results from audits pre and post project demonstrate a reduction in waste going to landfill as well as a dramatic increase in recycling rates. A reduction in litter rates were also recorded with an average decrease of 33% across the venues. Collectively all 9 grounds (with an average of 20 events hosted over a year) demonstrate that over 240, 000 litres (or approximately 40 tonnes) of recycling has been diverted from landfill.
